ABOUT ME
As a graduate of Leeds Conservatoire; Jazz and Contemporary Music course, I have enjoyed a wide and varied playing career to date. Having grown up playing in brass bands, I began my professional career in the working men’s club band circuit in the north east of England, I have played at every Butlins holiday camp in Britain, summer seasons, festivals, winter seasons, pantomimes, theatre shows, opera, cruises, European tours, support slots, recording and studio sessions, radio sessions, rock, pop, blues and ceilidh and folk bands, cover bands, function bands, big bands, brass bands, jazz bands, percussion ensembles and orchestras to name but a few.
I gained my PGCE at Leeds University and have taught Music in secondary schools from years 7 through to 13. As a teacher of percussion, I have taught students in reception classes right up to year 13, pupils with severe, profound and complex learning needs in Special Schools, adults, workshops, projects and county level orchestras and ensembles. I have also been musical director conducting and running rehearsals and concerts for brass bands, windbands and jazz bands and percussion ensembles. I teach a wide range of percussion instruments including drum kit, orchestral percussion (xylophone, marimba, vibraphone, timpani) Gamelan, African drums, Samba percussion and more.
As Senior Percussion Tutor for Suffolk County Music Service I wrote the percussion curriculum and exam syllabus that was used in schools across the county. My students have gained success with Trinity Guildhall, Rock School and Associated Board exams on drum kit and orchestral percussion from grades 1 to 8. Many former pupils have gone on to enjoy music as a career or a life time passion.
As a musical arranger and composer, I have written for many different styles of music and bands, from percussion ensembles, brass bands, jazz bands to function bands. I have composed and recorded music for many different ensembles including all the backing tracks used by Suffolk County Music Service drum kit exams.
